The victims all were young: some mere teenagers, the eldest in their twenties. Had they lived among us, they would have been in high school and college. In their own world, they were already seasoned warriors, scarred from dozens of combats. The archaeologists who found them centuries later didn't know whether to shout for joy or gape in horror. Most excavations in Peru reveal ancient remains resting in decorous repose. Why had these ancient Peruvians suffered such a horrible fate? The answer they found would electrify the scientific community - and reveal the dark side of one of antiquity's most brilliant civilization, the Moche.
