I am honored to be asked to share activities that are important in early childhood and elementary word study instruction. The activities highlight neglected aspects of teaching orthographic and word knowledge, especially rhythm in literacy. Concept of Word in Text, how articulation may be called upon in word study, and the role of spelling in the reciprocal processes of reading and writing (decoding/encoding) (Templeton & Bear, 2018). These activities and my outlook draw on the developmental framework of literacy described by Henderson (1981), Invernizzi and Hayes (2004) and Chall (1996).
